How to change the outgoing mail (SMTP) port in my e-mail client?

Many Internet providers have a policy of blocking port 25 - the default SMTP (outgoing mail) port. In this case a solution would be to use the alternative port that we provide: 2525. Here is how you can change the SMTP port in different widely used e-mail clients.

Mozilla Thunderbird

  1. Launch the Mozilla mail client
  2. Go to Edit > Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings
  3. Click Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  4. On the right hand side next to Server Name it should say Port: 25
  5. Change that number from 25 to 2525
  6. Click OK
  7. Restart Mozilla Thunderbird

Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express

  1. Go to Tools > Accounts (or Account Options)
  2. Click on the Mail tab
  3. Click on Properties
  4. Click on the Advanced tab
  5. Change the outgoing mail port from 25 to 2525
  6. Make sure that the box that says "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is NOT enabled
  7. Click OK
  8. Restart Outlook

Netscape 7.x

  1. Go to Edit > Mail and Newsgroup Account Settings
  2. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  3. On the right hand side next to Server Name it should say Port: 25
  4. Change that number from 25 to 2525
  5. Click OK
  6. Restart Netscape

Netscape 4.x

  1. Go to Edit > Preferences
  2. Expand the Mail and Newsgroups category by clicking on the + sign
  3. Click Mail Servers
  4. Change the Outgoing Mail Server: from mail.supremedns.com to mail.supremedns.com:2525
  5. Click OK
  6. Restart Netscape

Eudora for Windows

The option to change the SMTP port in Eudora 6.0 and newer versions is hidden, which makes the change a bit more difficult but still possible. To change the ports:

  1. Navigate to your Eudora install directory.
  2. Find a directory called "extrastuff".
  3. In this directory find the file named "esoteric.epi". Move this file into the main Eudora directory (up one level).

The above action should have activated some extra options in Eudora, so you would be able to change the SMTP port now:

  1. Launch Eudora
  2. Go to Tools > Options
  3. Click on Ports
  4. Change the port from 25 to 2525
  5. Click OK
  6. Restart Eudora

Eudora for Mac

  1. For version 6.0 and up, quit Eudora and look in the Eudora Application Folder for the folder "Extras". In this folder there is a file "Esoteric Settings". Drag this file into the "Eudora Stuff" folder.
  2. Launch Eudora
  3. Go to Special > Settings
  4. Click on Ports and Protocols
  5. Change the port from 25 to 2525
  6. Click OK
  7. Restart Eudora

Entourage

  1. Go to Tools > Accounts
  2. Click on Mail and go to Properties
  3. Click on Advanced Sending Options
  4. Make sure the box that says "This POP service requires a secure connection" is unchecked
  5. Check the box that says "Override default SMTP port:" and enter port 25
  6. Click OK
  7. Restart Entourage
